In 1965, the same year the Voting Rights Act was passed, Sarah Louise McCoy brought a class action law suit on behalf of herself and other African American students against the Louisiana State Board of Education, seeking admission as a student to Northeast Louisiana State College. Northeast Louisiana State College the-president Walker stated at the time that NLSC would comply with the federal government’s mandate to admit students of color, but also that he disagreed with it.With co-petitioner Bobby Saucer, Ms. McCoy successfully became one of the first African American students to study on campus.
