Brittany Carter is the Political Participation Fellow at LDF since 2021, focusing on voting rights litigation. She is a member of the litigation team in Allen v. Milligan, a high-profile redistricting case argued before the Supreme Court of the United States in October 2022, charging that Alabama’s 2021 enacted congressional district map drawn violates Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 (VRA) by severely diluting Black political power. She is also on the team litigating MWRO v. Trump, a lawsuit challenging Donald Trump, the Trump Campaign, and the Republican National Committee’s ongoing efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election by disenfranchising Black voters in Michigan.
Brittany also has worked with local leaders to conduct advocacy and voter protection efforts in Texas, Mississippi, and Illinois in recent elections. She contributed to the amicus brief in Contreras et al v. Illinois State Board of Elections et al. This case, filed by the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF), challenged Illinois’s legislative redistricting plans under Section 2 of the VRA and the Fourteenth Amendment for diluting Latino voting power and as a racial gerrymander. LDF’s amicus brief informed the panel of how the redistricting plans reduced the voting strength of Black voters as well.
Prior to joining LDF, Brittany served as a law clerk to the Honorable Sam A. Lindsay of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas. She received her J.D. from Cornell Law School. She received her Ph.D. in 20th Century United States History from New York University. She received her B.A. in History from the University of Rochester.
