R Gary Spencer

Gary Spencer is Senior Counsel to the Legal Defense Fund, joining LDF after 25 years in private practice and ten years as a public defender. He has appeared before more than 350 juries. Presently, his litigation matters include desegregation and redistricting cases. He holds a B.A. and J.D. from Howard University, and a Master of Theological Studies from the Columbia Theological Seminary (May, 2024).

 He is a member the State Bar of Georgia Board of Governors, serving on the Executive Committee and as Vice Chair on both the Disciplinary Rules Committee and the Seeking Equal Justice and Addressing Racism and Racial Bias Committee. He is a past president of the Gate City Bar Association and is a member of the Georgia Association of Black Women Attorneys, the Georgia Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the National Bar Association and the American Bar Association. Over the years he has volunteered with the ACLU of Georgia, the National Lawyers Guild and the National Conference of Black Lawyers. He served as faculty at the Bill Daniel Trial Advocacy Program and is a former board member of the Board of Directors Center. He was inducted into the American College of Trial Lawyers in 2019.
