Next week, LDF’s President and Director-Counsel Sherrilyn Ifill will be speaking at the Summit for Civil Rights at Rutgers University Labor Education Center in New Brunswick, NJ on May 2nd and 3rd.
The summit’s goal is to “provide both political and scholarly support for a reinvigorated Civil Rights movement and progressive policy agenda embraced by a multiracial and intergenerational constituency.” It is being presented by The Institute on Metropolitan Opportunity, The Labor Education Action Research Network at Rutgers, The Coalition of Black Trade Unionists (CBTU) and Building One America, with support from the Ford Foundation, the United Auto Workers Union and the American Postal Workers Union. The summit’s agenda includes the following presentations and workshops:
- The Power of Multiracial Electoral Politics
- The Social and Human Costs of Racial Segregation
- Campaigns that Demonstrate the Power of Civil Rights Today
- Building a Civil Rights Progressive Agenda
Additional speakers for this year’s summit include Congressman and House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn, Attorney General of Minnesota Keith Ellison, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, NAACP President Derrick Johnson, among other social and economic justice advocates, scholars, and leaders.
