Today, NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. signed onto a set of principles that provide a map for public safety during COVID-19. Recent reports have shown that Black people are suffering from police brutality during the COVID-19 pandemic for non-violent activities and conduct, such as not wearing personal protective equipment (PPE), a face covering, and not practicing social distance. At the same time, police officers have been seen handing out PPE to groups of white people who exhibit identical public conduct. COVID-19 cannot become another means by which police justify violence against people and communities of color.
