Yesterday, the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF) sent a letter to Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson requesting he implement a statewide moratorium on evictions and foreclosures to protect Arkansas’s most vulnerable households facing extreme economic distress as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic

Arkansas is one of only a handful of states that has yet to impose such a moratorium. There is evidence indicating that evictions are being filed daily, including against renters who are suffering from COVID-19, for nonpayment of rent despite several measures implemented by the Arkansas Supreme Court and more must be done to keep Arkansans in their homes. Clearly these measures are not enough to stem the tide of evictions that will occur from the pandemic’s economic fallout. The letter also reiterates our request made in our April 13 letter for a statewide moratorium on utility shutoffs and reconnection of utility services for previously disconnected customers.
